Details of Ph.D. Research Work
Structures with special refractive index arrangement have tendency to alter the electromagnetic (EM) flow. These structures with alternate low-high refractive index arrangement can control the EM wave propagation and are known as photonic crystals. The low-high refractive index arrangement creates a forbidden band gap (similar to the electronic band gap in solids, created by periodic potentials), that do not allow a particular range of EM frequency to flow through the structure. Tuning the refractive index of these structures leads to tunable photonic crystals.
In my Ph.D. work I have focused on tuning the photonic band gap by manipulating the refractive index of material through acoustic waves of GHz frequencies. I have theoretically showed that the one dimensional photonic crystals can be produced in homogeneous slabs by the action of acoustic waves (density waves). This is achieved by the application of Lamb waves (a special acoustic wave). The fundamental symmetric Lamb mode perturbation in slab leads to sinusoidal refractive index modulation along the wave propagation direction. The framework, modeling and calculations have been done on MATLAB platform.
The altered refractive index along the direction of Lamb wave behaves like a low high refractive index arrangement. The generated one dimensional photonic structure is acoustically tunable. Here in this structure, created forbidden band gaps depend on acoustic wave's frequencies. The range of forbidden band gaps of interest can be produced and tuned by selecting slab material, slab thickness and in few cases slab orientation. Since the electromagnetic energy flow and the perturbing cause (acoustic waves) reside inside the slab, they do not affect the nearby environment. Such acoustically tunable photonic crystals are thus of great interest that can be used without affecting the surroundings and helpful in sophisticated sensing.
